Adventure Quest Level 9 Computing1984Middle Earth has long been a tranquil and peaceful place. The battles against the Dark Lord are ancient history, and no dragon has been seen since the sack of Esgaroth. Even the last elves sailed for the West centuries ago, after the rescue of their fellows from the dungeons below Colossal Cavern.

But disaster struck.A vast army of orcs swept down from the north, crushing all in their path, and they now besiege the last brave defenders in Minas Tirith. All seems hopeless. Then, to your amazement, you are summoned by the Wizards High Council.

"The orcs are servants of the Demon Lord AGALIAREPT, who has taken up residence in the Dark Tower on the edge of the world. From safety he controls our enemies. Perhaps one brave hero, acting alone, could sneak into the tower and defeat him. I don't think you've got a ghost of a chance, but the King insists we do something. Will you volunteer?"

Naturally you refuse. But no one listens. Good luck!***Re-released in 1986 as part of the "Jewels of Darkness" compilation with some added illustrative graphics for 128k machines.

Animal Vegetable Mineral  Amsoft;B.E.S. (B.E.S.)1984The program has been designed to allow a child to 'educate' the computer by entering a series of questions and objects. During this sequence a child is encouraged to think about the origins of objects and to learn about the differences between them. The computer responds by thanking the child for teaching it to tell the difference between the objects entered.

It should be noted that the computer only knows six objects at the start of a new database, so leaving he stimulating task of building the database to the child. As the database grows the computer asks more and more questions about the object. It is best used with children of between the ages 7 and 13 years, where it generates interesting discussion and encourages the use of reference books.***

Classic Adventure Amsoft (Abersoft)1984Before Crowther and Woods wrote Adventure in 1978 games all had something more or less in common. The player knew the rules, and had to try to use them to get the best possible score. In an Adventure the aim of the game is to discover the rules!

To do this, the computer acts as your eyes and hands. It will tell you where you are, and what you can see. You can tell the computer what you would like to do by giving it simple one or two word commands like "THROW AXE", "CLIMB" or "DRINK WATER".

The aim of the game is to find the many fabulous treasures hidden, and often guarded, in the Colossal Caves, and get them back to the building. But take care! Magic is said to work in the caves, and things are not always what they seem! Many things you pick up have strange side-effects, and there are shady and often unfriendly characters lurking in the dark.

Typing "INFO" will get you some general information about playing Classic Adventure. To see how well you are doing type "SCORE". "HELP" may be helpful at times. "INVENT" gives you an inventory of what you are carrying. "QUIT" allows you to finish the game.

Don't forget the caves have very twisty tunnels so if you go "NORTH", going "SOUTH" doesn't always get you back where you were!

Colossal Adventure Level 9 Computing1984Colossal Cavern is a name of power, whispered in dark corners, embodying incredible riches and untold danger. Sensible folk hold this cave to be a myth, the product of fevered imaginations - but every
year a handful of people set out to find it, driven by necessity or by overwhelming greed.

Most return empty-handed with tales of fruitless wanderings, or lies about the dangers faced: volcanos, dragons, gigantic snakes and the like. But some have never returned, and speculation holds that they are the successful ones who have found the cave and perished - or maybe used the enormous wealth from it to found great empires in far-off lands where they live in luxury.

Thus it is a unique event when a travel-stained warrior enters the tavern where you are sitting one evening, pays the inn-keeper with an absurdly high value gold coin, and over his drink claims that he has visited Colossal Cavern - and escaped with his life!

The other drinkers flatly disbelieve him, "thief" and "mercenary" are two of their more flattering suggestions to explain his wealth, but you are not so sure - for he has a haunted look and refuses to discuss his exploits. Thus, when you realise that an ambush is being planned to deprive the stranger of his money (and life), you lead him out to safety by a back route.

"A thousand thanks!", he exclaims when the sounds of pursuit finally die away, "May the Gods smile upon you for your deed tonight! But I fear that your friends may seek revenge if you return."

"Thus, to reward you for your valour, I will give you the most valuable treasure that I own ... the location of Colossal Cavern!", and he presses a crumpled scrap of paper into your palm. Frankly, you were expecting hard cash - and a lot of it - but he looks like a good man in a fight, so you accept the meagre reward and even manage to shake his hand warmly.

Despite your natural suspicions that the map may be a fake, it would be foolish to stay and face the wrath of your fellows, so you set out to follow it. And the map turns out to be genuine! It leads you through uncharted lands: over mountains, through forests and skirting deserts - always avoiding the inhabited places of the earth - until one day's journey would bring you to Colossal Cavern itself.

Then disaster strikes. You are leaning on the wall of a building from which a river emerges and follows the road south. To the north is open country and all around is dense forest. As you attempt to decipher the next part of the map, a freak gust of wind lifts it from your hand - and carries it into the water. Rescue is not possible for the river sucks it down instantly, and in any case you cannot swim.

The next part is up to you: to find the Cavern, enter it, and return with its treasure. And, as you stand thinking, you remember a scrawled note on the margin of the map:

"Warning, Magic works in the Cavern!"

Dungeon Adventure Level 9 Computing1984Jubilation reigns in Minas Tirath! At sunset yesterday the city was beseiged by a sea of orcs and it seemed that the defenders were doomed. But at sunrise, the watch looked out over an empty plain - the attackers had fled when on the point of victory. The first reaction was stunned amazement, but gradually a rumour began to spread: "The Demon Lord is dead!"

A two week carnival was announced and the population proceeded to enjoy themselves as you would expect. But you were wiser. Clearly, with the Demon Lord out of the way, there would be rich pickings amongst the ruins of His fortress...

Now, eight days later, you stand on a sandbank beside a great river. North of you are the dungeons of the Demon Lord. You are cold and wet, but determined to brave the hidden dangers of the caves. But then a shiver runs down your spine: a brooding presence is watching... perhaps the demon is still alive, and waiting for you.

Lords of Time Level 9 Computing1984The dream returned last night: so passing strange!

It seemed that History was cast askew, and dinosaurs remained to fight Mankind. But the great beasts for all their Lizard might, were caught in cunning pits and traps, and doomed.

You see brave knights, and dragons breathing fire. But 'tis the latter who are good and fine, the knights are evil to a man. Their armour melts, the knights are those in chess. You've White, with King and Pawns alone, against the Black army. But yet, in just a dozen moves, you win! You look at your opponent, it's no man but a home micro known for Chess, the maker's own program! The board is nine-by-nine. Around it sit nine men. They talk and giggle, reaching to the board, and moving living pieces - living men. Each move reverberates, your vision blurs and fades.

It is the present, on a TV a star (of cow-b movies, once but little shown). The president? His trigger finger poised? You read the morning paper: something's changed - the great recovery from North Sea Oil . . is gone. The money pays the unemployed instead. It's too absurd, you wake, it's true!!

A poem lingers in your memory:

Into the cauldron you must throw
an olive branch, makes friendship grow.
A dragon's wing, a sign of flight,
An ivory tusk, a sign of might.
Mix in the teardrop, a touch of sadness,
and the evil eye, a sign of badness.
Add a dinosaur egg, a sign of birth,
with the jester's cap, a symbol of mirth,
plus the silicon chip, a vital invention,
and the gold buckle, a bone of contention.
If you do this, before time runs out,
a winner you'll be - there is no doubt.
But take care when you find the lords,
or you'll not gain your just rewards,
your quest will all have been in vain,
and you will have to start again.

Simply complete the formula to defeat the Evil Timelords who are meddling with Earth's History

Return to Eden Level 9 Computing1984Return to Eden is set in the 24th Century, on one of the weirdest planets around. It has well over 200 locations, with lots of fun and puzzles. And the Amstrad, CBM64 and Spectrum versions have graphics: about 240 pictures each!

Level 9 Computing specialise in adventures. Big adventures, with detailed scenery and interesting storylines. This means more enjoyment for you and we'll send a free clue sheet, with hundreds of answers, if you get stuck.

If you think that you're losing out on adventure because we've added pictures, by the way: don't! There is as much text and as many puzzles in this game as in previous Level 9 adventures. We've just had to use even better compression techniques and every bit of memory in your micro.

You play Kim Kimberley, secret agent. Escaping from false imprisonment aboard a colony starship, you are stranded in the alien jungle of Eden. Your only hope is to reach the robot city of Enoch, said to be fighting a valiant war against killer plants in this spectacular SF adventure. Investigate the air bush, find your roots and watch out for the parrot! The alien corn is tricky, "Pepsy" Koala is mischievous and the least said about the city robots the better.

Return to Eden will amuse, bemuse and entertain - and you're doing well if you finish it in less than a month. Good Adventuring!
